Welcome to my Website!
Merry-go-round music makes me laugh. The rat-ta-tat-tat of
the drums recalls daddies hoisting children onto the carousel, reminds me of
the way stomachs flutter as the machinery groans to life and wooden horses
shudder before lifting to set imaginations soaring.
I write novels mostly for and about women, although some men like them, too.
Like you, I had hobbies and dreams growing up: cheerleading, golf and
tennis, proms. For spectating, I am almost obsessive about football. Mostly,
however, I love romance--not necessarily as a spectator.
I went to the University of Oklahoma, primarily to be close to great
football. I planned to be an M.D., but as things evolved, I changed to
journalism. People said I wrote well. You don’t know those things when
you’re young. People have to help you define your gifts.
Bill Ervin was my best friend, a man who combines the most important human
qualities, but who nearly ruined our idyllic, platonic friendship when he
suggested we marry, a radical concept. Our union has worked well. We have
four grown children and are still best friends. We live in McAlester,
Oklahoma, population 20,000. We stand at attention, hats doffed, hands over
our hearts, to honor the stars and stripes at parades and ballgames. We know
all the words to The Star Spangled Banner and belt it out when the
opportunity presents. We are devout Christians, yellow dog Democrats, crazy
about our kids, only a little less crazy about our grandkids, and even enjoy
our in-laws.
Life is comfortable here and familiar. America’s heartland is richly blessed
with fictional characters. Critics say I write good dialogue. That’s because
I eavesdrop. A lot. I am attune to the thrum of life around me, like the
rat-ta-tat-tat which, though it does not carry the tune, enriches the music
of the carousel. And that thrum compels me to write books about the
undercurrents in life which drive us. They are neither social commentaries,
nor texts. They are, rather, the books of my heart.

New Book -
Murder Aboard The Choctaw Gambler -
New Book
When a croupier is murdered on the Choctaw Gambler Riverboat Casino,
State Bureau of Investigation Agent Jim Wills invites newspaper reporter
Jancy Dewhurst to accompany him to the scene.
The dead croupier resembles casino owner Jesse Chase, a former friend
and business associate of ranching tycoon Tyrone Gideon. Tyrone’s son
G.C., heir apparent to the Gideon empire, has hired a man to murder
Chase. G.C. ran up a debt aboard Gambler, refused to pay, and was banned
from the facility. He believes the debt and his humiliation will die
with his dad’s old friend.
Following rumors of G.C.'s spending excesses, Jancy visits G.C.’s
elderly father to ask about their possible impending bankruptcy. Frail
and blind, Mr. Gideon is surprised by Jancy’s revelations. He has given
his son a free hand with his assets, but had no idea G.C. had indebted
the ranch for millions. A drunken, raging G.C. interrupts Jancy and
Tyrone and orders Jancy to leave. Moments later, G.C. batters the old
man, then blames Jancy for provoking him. G.C. orders Bubba Valentine,
his bodyguard, to kill Jancy for meddling. He describes in detail how
the nosy reporter is to die.
Struggling with her contradictory desires--to settle in Bishop,
Oklahoma, with Jim or to pursue her career as an overseas news
correspondent--Jancy doesn’t realize she’s been targeted for death. She
has no idea that her car being run off the road on a rainy afternoon is
intentional. The danger finally becomes clear, even to her, however,
when a bomb destroys her newly repaired vehicle, killing two kids who
had taken it for a joy ride.
With Jim’s assistance, Jancy overcomes one life-threatening dilemma only
to find herself mired in yet another.
